The short answer is there is no open burning in the City of Shelbyville. It is addressed in Ordinance 91.03 (A) that states: “It is unlawful for any person to kindle or maintain an outdoor fire, bonfire, leaves, or rubbish fire or authorize such a fire to be kindled or maintained on private property, a street or alley, or elsewhere in the city.”

They should be placed on every level of a residence and outside of sleeping areas. This subject is also addressed by city ordinance. City Ordinance 91.37 states that: “ A dwelling must have at least one functional detector installed according to manufacturers instructions, outside of each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, on the ceiling or wall not less than 4 inches nor more than 12 inches from the ceiling, and on each additional level of the dwelling.” Further, the ordinance goes on to say, “ All smoke detectors must be battery operated or hard-wired into the dwelling’s electrical system, accessible for servicing and testing, and maintained and checked once every six months by the occupant to ensure that the smoke detector is in operational condition.”

Question: I would like a job with the Shelbyville Fire Department. How do I apply?
Answer: Click here to view the answer!

We do one hiring process per year and take applications only at this time. From this hiring process, we develop a list of potential candidates for hire in the next year. If we have openings or new positions, we hire from that list. If not, a year later we begin the process anew and develop a new list. Our application period usually begins in August, September, or October. Watch the local newspapers and this website for more information.
